The SAT and ACT
are coming...

Are You Ready?

Every year, colleges are flooded with thousands of applications from qualified students. Competition is on the rise, and admissions counselors are focusing on students with strong SAT* and ACT® scores.

Students who dream of attending a highly selective college should take the SAT and/or ACT. Besides good transcripts and letters of recommendation, entrance exams are an important part of the admission process.

For a high school graduate to be competitive:

  • SAT scores in the high 600's are a requirement.
  • ACT scores in the high 20's or 30's are a requirement.
  • Both tests are accepted by most colleges.  Since the student will do well on one or the other, both should be taken.

The National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) found that strategies courses for standardized admission tests can yield positive gains. In fact, more and more students are opting to take one of each test rather than repeating the same test over again to try and improve their score.

Not just for admissions...

High SAT/ACT scores are not only necessary to get into the college of your choice but are a requirement for merit awards.  A score of 1800 or better on the PSAT is required to put the student in the running for National Merit Scholarships.  Colleges and Universites also offer merit awards.  Theses awards are renewable each of the 4 years and can be quite substantial.  Raising test scores could result in a savings of $20,000 - 40,000 a year.

Better Test Prep, Better Test Scores

Strategies are a proven way to raise test scores.  A student should look to raise his/her scores by 160 points or more on the SAT and 3 - 4 points on the ACT. Before deciding on a strategies course, the student should determine which is the better test for him or her. Sylvan offers free practice tests and analysis with no obligation to help you decide.
